The date
Amazon's 75-character title limit applies from 27 July 2026.
All categories except media (books, music, video), across all marketplaces — including amazon.de, .fr, .it and .es.
What changes on July 27
Amazon is standardising product titles to a shorter, mobile-friendly length. Three things you need to know:
- Titles cap at 75 characters, including spaces. The old ~200-character title is gone. This applies to every category except media, on every marketplace — amazon.de included.
- A new field — Item Highlights (125 characters). This is where the detail you cut from the title now goes. It's searchable and shown alongside your title in search results and on the listing, so it's not a dumping ground — treat it as "title, part two."
- Miss the deadline and Amazon's AI rewrites your title. After July 27, over-length titles get replaced with an AI-generated version, gradually. Brand-registered sellers get a 14-day window to review, edit or reject the suggestion in Seller Central → Review Listing Changes; everyone else gets whatever the AI decides. So do it yourself, first.
Amazon offers its own AI tools (Enhance Listings) to shorten titles automatically. They're fine at counting characters — and, as we'll see, poor at doing it well in German.
Why 75 characters is brutal in German
German words run roughly 30% longer than English and love to compound. The single phrase "Vakuumiergerät für Lebensmittel" already eats 32 of your 75 characters — before you've said anything that sells. Add the brand and one benefit and you're out of room.
That's exactly where Amazon's English-trained auto-rewrite falls down: it chops German titles in the wrong place, breaks compounds into nonsense, drops umlauts, and leaves you with a title that reads like a machine wrote it — which German shoppers distrust in a second. Fitting a title that still reads native and sells into 75 German characters, then using the 125-char Item Highlights well, is a craft problem, not a character count.
A real before / after
A typical foreign-brand German title (illustrative), and how we'd split it under the new rule:
Before · one ~180-char title (now non-compliant)
Brand Vakuumierer für Lebensmittel – Starkes Vakuumiergerät mit 6 Modi, Trocken- und Feuchtmodus, inkl. 10 Profi-Beuteln, Schneidmesser & abnehmbarer Tropfschale, ideal für Sous-vide
After · title ≤75 chars
Brand Vakuumierer für Lebensmittel – hält Speisen bis 8× länger frisch
+ Item Highlights ≤125 chars
Trocken- & Feuchtmodus · inkl. 10 Profi-Beuteln · integriertes Schneidmesser · ideal für Sous-vide
The title keeps brand + product + the one benefit that wins the click; everything else moves to the searchable Item Highlights. Both read native — which the auto-rewrite won't.
The pre-deadline checklist
- Find your titles over 75 characters — start with your highest-revenue listings and work down, before Amazon's AI works down the list for you.
- Rewrite the title to brand + product + one benefit (~75 chars), in real, native German — not a truncation of the old one.
- Move the rest into Item Highlights (≤125 chars): materials, key spec, what's in the box, secondary use. Keep it searchable and readable.
- Check the basics — no banned characters (
! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦), no word more than twice, reads native. - If you're brand-registered, watch Review Listing Changes after July 27 and reject/replace any AI rewrite that reads off.
Don't forget the compliance half
A title crisis is a good moment to check the things that get German listings suppressed entirely — the same foreign sellers scrambling on titles usually also miss these:

- EPR (LUCID / WEEE) — packaging + electronics registers Amazon checks. Full guide →
- PPWR — packaging-EPR verification tightens 12 Aug 2026, right after this deadline. Full guide →
